November 20, (THEWILL) — Former Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Olusegun Awolowo, has died at the age of 62.
His family announced his passing on Thursday, describing him as an exceptional patriot, devoted public servant, and the unwavering anchor of his family.
“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo.
“He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather, steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” the family said.
Awolowo, the son of the late Segun Awolowo and prominent Lagos socialite Hajia Zainab Abah Folawiyo, was also the grandson of the late nationalist and statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
“A painfully loyal servant to Nigeria, he dedicated his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment,” the family noted, adding that his legacy in public service would remain enduring.
“He was a true family man, a great friend, a wonderful servant of God, and a deeply beautiful human being. We are shattered by this loss, but forever grateful for his life, his legacy, and the love he poured into all of us. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
Awolowo led the NEPC for several years, championing Nigeria’s push to expand non-oil exports and drive economic diversification. His tenure also advanced trade promotion and intra-African business opportunities.
He attended Mayhill Convent School alongside Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, before proceeding to Igbobi College, Lagos, and later Government College, Ibadan. He studied Law at Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989.
His career spanned private legal practice and multiple roles in government.
He served under former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before being appointed NEPC Executive Director in November 2013 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He continued in the role under President Muhammadu Buhari until 2021.
In July 2021, he was elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations of ECOWAS member states, extending his leadership to the regional stage.
Awolowo is survived by his wife and children, including his daughter Seun, founder of Teach-A-Girl Nigeria, Leads Africa, and 3D Living Moments.
