November 19, (THEWILL) – Four Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom have been jailed for their involvement in a violent street fight in Leicester.
The defendants, Destiny Ojo, 21; Habib Lawal, 21; Ridwanulahi Raheem, 21; and Joshua Davies-Ero, 21, were convicted of violent disorder, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of a bladed article following the incident.
The altercation, which took place in the early hours of November 4, 2021, on New Park Street in Leicester, saw the group engaging in a brutal street fight armed with knives and a baseball bat.
The violence left an 18-year-old man with four stab wounds, necessitating hospital treatment.
On November 14, the defendants were sentenced for their roles in the attack. Destiny Ojo, a resident of Plumstead, London, was sentenced to seven years in prison for violent disorder, attempted GBH, and GBH with intent.
Habib Lawal, from Bexley, London, received five years for similar charges, while Ridwanulahi Raheem, from Lambeth, London, was sentenced to three years for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article.
Joshua Davies-Ero, also from Bexley, was jailed for two years for violent disorder.
A fifth defendant, Justin Asamoah, 22, of Merton, who previously pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article, will be sentenced on November 22.
Detective Constable Sean Downey described the incident as a serious example of violent disorder, emphasising the potential danger it posed to both the individuals involved and innocent bystanders.
“It is extremely fortunate that further injury was not caused to the people involved or to other members of the public who witnessed the incident. This could have been a very different investigation.
“We will not tolerate violent disorder in our communities and will take action against those responsible,” Downey said.
