December 05, (THEWILL) – French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has resigned after his government was ousted Wednesday by parliament in a vote of no confidence.
Barnier handed in his resignation to President Emanuel Macron on Thursday but was asked to stay in the role until a successor had been appointed.
His resignation follows a no confidence vote in his three-month-old minority administration by lawmakers from the far-right Rassemblement National and leftist Nouveau Front Populaire bloc, over a deficit-reducing budget.
A total of 331 legislators of the 577-member parliament voted Wednesday to remove Barnier’s government.
Meanwhile, French President Macron will address the nation on Thursday evening on developments.
Under France’s constitution, the President cannot call new legislative elections until July, a year after the last vote.
