June 25, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the receipt of applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the Commission’s second regular consultative meeting with media executives held at its headquarters in Abuja.

“As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties,” Yakubu said.

He explained that the applications are being processed in line with legal procedures and INEC’s guidelines, noting that all but six of the applications have been formally acknowledged.

The remaining six, he said, will be acknowledged before the end of the week.

“For emphasis, I wish to inform Nigerians, particularly those interested in registering new political parties, that the handbook containing the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 is already available on the Commission’s website,” Yakubu stated.

In a move to ensure transparency, the Commission also released the full list of the 110 associations, detailing their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the names of their pro tem national chairmen and secretaries.

“For transparency and public information, the list will be uploaded to our website and social media platforms shortly. Hard copies are also included in your folders for this meeting,” he added.

Among the proposed parties are the Obidient Peoples Party, which lists Mr. Barry Avotu Johnson as its pro tem national chairman, and the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), reportedly backed by members of the anti-Tinubu coalition, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; and Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats.
