December 05, (THEWILL) – The number of lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly increased on Thursday, following the defection of five members of opposition parties in the Green chamber.
The defectors, four Labour Party (LP) members and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)member declared their decision to join the APC during House plenary on Thursday. They include Tochukwu Okere (LP, Imo State); Donatus Mathew (LP, Kaduna State); Bassey Akiba (LP, Cross River State); Iyawu Esosa (LP, Edo State) and Erthiatake Ibori-Suenu (PDP, Delta State).
The defection, announced by Reps Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary was, however, rejected by the minority whip, Ali Isah JC (PDP-Gombe), who asked the speaker to declare the seats of the defected lawmakers vacant in line with Section 68(1) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).
