March 13, (THEWILL) — Poor power supply has hit Anambra hard, with gas shortages, the December 2025 Escravos-Lagos pipeline explosion, and global crises crippling electricity generation nationwide, the FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company (FpEDC) said, appealing to residents to remain patient.
In a statement signed by Izunna Okafor, Head of Communications, FpEDC stressed that the ongoing outages are not due to operational failures by the company.
“Electricity distributed in Anambra is generated elsewhere and transmitted through the national grid before reaching our interface stations. Whenever national electricity generation declines, allocations to all distribution companies across Nigeria automatically drop”, he explained.
Okafor highlighted that the energy sector is grappling with a severe shortage of natural gas for thermal power plants, a situation worsened by mounting debts of about ₦6 trillion owed to generation companies, which have weakened their ability to procure adequate fuel.
He also pointed to the ongoing Israel/US-Iran conflict, which has caused petroleum product scarcity and price spikes, further complicating the power situation.
“Thermal plants rely heavily on natural gas. The shortage has forced several generating units to shut down or operate below installed capacity”, Okafor said.
Responding to planned protests by customers in Anambra, FpEDC acknowledged citizens’ right to express frustration but urged understanding, noting that protests against distribution companies may not resolve the problem since the root causes lie with generation.
The company reassured residents of its commitment to transparency, fair billing, regulatory compliance, and improved customer engagement.
“Once national electricity generation improves and allocations increase, supply to Anambra State will also improve correspondingly”, Okafor added.
