April 9, (THEWILL) – Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed in a fire outbreak that consumed four buildings at the popular Dosumu Market in Idumota area of Lagos State on Tuesday.
An X user, Adunni, who posted a video of the incident, said the fire was caused by an explosion from a generator.
The social media user disclosed that firefighters arrived at the scene to put the fire out.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Tuesday, Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said four buildings collapsed due to the intensity of the fire while 14 others were seriously impacted by the inferno.
Farinloye said the cause of the fire, according to sources, could be attributed to the refuelling of a running generator at the market, which resulted in a fire that could not be contained.
Emergency responders at the scene of the event included NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police and fire service of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
In a related development, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service announced that a fire incident occurred in a three-storey building housing various hair wigs on 48 Breadfruit Street, Apongbon, Lagos Island on Monday.
LSFRS Director, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement, said no casualty was recorded but blamed the incident on careless handling of a generator.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has initiated a comprehensive operation to contain a fire outbreak at 48 Breadfruit Street, Apongbon, Lagos, which began at approximately 12:24hrs on Monday.
“The blaze, originating from the second floor of a three-storey building primarily housing various hair wigs, prompted a swift and coordinated response from multiple fire crews, including those stationed at Ebute Elefun, Sari Iganmu, Dolphin, and Alausa of the agency, as well as the Federal Fire Service.
“Despite challenges posed by the difficult terrain and heightened concerns among traders, the fire has been successfully extinguished, preventing its spread to adjacent property and salvaging what remains of the affected structure.
“There have been no reported casualties, and the cause of the fire is attributed to careless handling of a generator,” Adeseye said
