March 12, (THEWILL) – In a major push for economic empowerment and job creation, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has empowered over 2,000 entrepreneurs through the Arise Entrepreneurial Equipment Support Scheme.
The event, held at Ibom Hall Grounds on Tuesday, marked a significant milestone in the state’s economic development and a fulfillment of the governor’s campaign promises.
Speaking at the event, Governor Eno emphasized that the initiative was designed to promote entrepreneurship, enhance small and medium-scale enterprises, and drive job creation. He said his passion is to deliver on his campaign promises by supporting entrepreneurs and creating opportunities that will build a thriving middle class. He described the scheme as a strategic investment in the people, targeted at active business owners to strengthen the local economy.
As part of the empowerment program, over 10,000 sets of business equipment were distributed to beneficiaries to expand their ventures and foster economic growth.
In addition to business support, Governor Eno also provided direct financial and educational assistance to outstanding individuals in the state. Notable beneficiaries include 77 mini buses and 31 saloon cars for selected entrepreneurs. A sum of ₦10 million was awarded to Edidiong Essien, a student who scored 8 As in the 2023 WASSCE. Full sponsorship for a Master’s degree was granted to Dr. Joseph Akpan, the overall best graduate of the University of Uyo, with 10 distinctions.
Five Akwa Ibom students who won the Singapore-Bilateral International School Debate received ₦15 million, while their teachers were given ₦5 million. Another ₦5 million was awarded to Otobong Philip Udoh, a female tipper truck driver making strides in a male-dominated field.
Governor Eno noted that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to rewarding excellence, supporting enterprises, and uplifting lives.
The empowerment drive follows his economic interventions at the Abak Federal Constituency Town Hall Meeting on March 8, where 178 farmers received ₦111 million in grants, 442 traders benefited from ₦176 million in financial support, six small and medium enterprises secured ₦30 million in funding, and 198 craftsmen received equipment support.
Charging the beneficiaries to make the most of the resources provided, the governor urged them to use their success stories to inspire others and contribute to the state’s economic transformation.
