March 25, (THEWILL) — The Kebbi State Government has rallied support for victims of a deadly attack in Shanga Local Government Area, while moving to tighten security across the state following the killing of security personnel by gunmen.
Gunmen on Tuesday night ambushed troops at Giro Masa community in Shanga LGA, killing nine soldiers and one police officer, alongside some civilians. The attackers also set two military gun trucks ablaze, in an incident that has heightened security concerns in the area.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the development on Wednesday, after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where those injured in the attack are receiving treatment. The governor toured both the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital as part of an on-the-spot assessment.
Describing the incident as tragic, Idris paid tribute to the fallen security personnel, commending their sacrifice in the line of duty to protect lives and property in the state.
“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens”, he said.
In a move aimed at providing immediate relief, the governor assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured and extend necessary support to the families of the deceased security personnel.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the victims and reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security architecture across Kebbi State.
As part of ongoing response efforts, the governor proceeded to the scene of the attack for further assessment, while security agencies intensified operations to track down the perpetrators and prevent a recurrence. The swift intervention by the state government has been widely viewed as a step toward restoring confidence and stability in the affected community.
