October 30, (THEWILL) — Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has thrown his weight behind the creation of an additional state in the South-East, describing it as a necessary step toward correcting the long-standing imbalance in Nigeria’s federal structure.
Nwifuru stated this on Wednesday while speaking with journalists shortly after the State Executive Council meeting held at the New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki.
He said the South-East, which remains the only region in the country with five states, deserves parity with other geopolitical zones that have six or more.
The governor declared, “Yes, I support the creation of another state in the South-East; it is imperative for the region
“This initiative will help to address the inequities we have experienced over the years.”
Responding to reports that Ebonyi State might lose three local government areas to the proposed new state, Nwifuru said he had not received any official communication on the matter.
He said, “I am no longer in the legislature; I am in the executive. I have not seen any document to that effect, and I cannot comment on what I have not seen.”
The governor also expressed concern over the growing trend of young people using social media to insult state elders and political leaders.
He said,
“Some people are making money from this. Our youths are resorting to mocking their elders online, but they must understand that there are traditional consequences for disrespecting elders.”
