July 01, (THEWILL) — Tragedy struck in Kano State on Sunday as an explosion from an unexploded ordnance (UXO) killed one person and injured six others at a scrapyard in the Kofar Dawanau area of Dala Local Government Area.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on June 30, when metal scrap dealers were offloading items from a truck with registration number PKM 709 ZY, according to counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama.
Preliminary investigations by the Bomb Disposal Unit (BOMPOL) revealed that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade, likely mixed in with the scrap materials.
The blast claimed the life of Hamisu Uzairu, a 55-year-old labourer from PRP Kwanar Jaba Quarters in Nasarawa LGA, who was confirmed dead at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Six others — identified as Sani Ahmed, Najib Sani, Jabir Tijani, Wada Abdullahi, Huzaifa Yusha’u, and Bilyaminu Snu — sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The scrapyard is owned by Jamilu Zakari Salisu, who promptly reported the incident to the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.
Police authorities said the site was immediately cordoned off and access restricted to ensure public safety. An investigation has been launched to trace the source of the explosive device.
The Kano State Police Command has advised scrap dealers and members of the public to exercise heightened vigilance and report any suspicious metallic objects to security agencies, warning that failure to do so could lead to similar deadly incidents.
