
June 14, (THEWILL) – A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Chief Eyo Okon Edet, has been reportedly abducted by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Oron, a riverine community of the state.
Chief Edet, popularly known as Aswang, who was the Deputy Coordinator of Divine Mandate Campaign Organisation in Oron, is reported to have been kidnapped by hoodlums, numbering over six in his fuel station, along Marina Road, on Monday, June 12.
It was gathered that Aswang, the Chairman of Eyotech Oil Nig limited, was accosted by his abductors when he visited his filling station in the evening to pass instructions to his staff members.
An eye witness told our reporter that the chieftain, who is in his mid-60s was beaten up and whisked away in a Sienna SUV, which was later found burnt to ashes by the Atlantic Shores of Oron.
It was gathered that the abductors transferred him to a waiting speed boat at the sea and set the Siena vehicle that they used for the operation ablaze.
As of the time of this report, the abductors are yet to establish contact with the family to name their ransom.
Another eyewitness who gave his name simply as Austin and said he was at the fuel station when the incident occurred, narrated, I was there at his filling station when those boys came, they dragged him into their Sienna and shot sporadically into the air, beat him and took him away. I heard that they got to a spot and put him into a speed boat and set fire to their vehicle”. I was so scared to follow them.”
Meanwhile, when contacted by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Odiko MacDon, confirmed the incident and said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered an investigation into the matter.
According to him, “We received the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has visited the scene of the incident and went to the waterfront even though a scrap of the Sienna used to perpetuate the act that was burnt has been recovered. Investigations have since commenced and I’m sure the perpetrators will be brought to book in no distant time.”
