January 07, (THEWILL) — Gunmen on Tuesday night attacked the National Park Service (NPS) office in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, killing five personnel and leaving others critically injured.
The attack, which occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, was reportedly carried out by suspected bandits who stormed the facility and opened fire on officers on duty.
An eyewitness resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the armed men arrived suddenly and launched a violent assault on the officers stationed at the facility.
According to the source, five personnel were killed during the attack, while others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The bodies of the victims are yet to be fully recovered as they are believed to be located within the surrounding forest area.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, described the assailants as yet-to-be-identified armed men.
“Yes, there was an attack by yet-to-be-identified men against the men of the National Park Service,” DSP Olayinka said.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, CP Femi Haruna, alongside other security service chiefs, proceeded to the area on Wednesday to assess the situation and coordinate security operations.
DSP Olayinka added that the Commissioner has deployed tactical teams, Mobile Police Force operatives, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to the affected area to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
According to the PPRO, the deployment is aimed at restoring calm, securing the area, and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The police spokesperson urged residents of Oloka and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that investigations are ongoing to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.
