August 07, (THEWILL) – Suspected hoodlums, on Wednesday, dispersed protesters who converged in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to protest the hunger and economic hardship in the country.
According to reports, the miscreants, who converged at the Federal Secretariat, violently threatened those demonstrating, dispersing them in the process.
Deborah Agbalam, a Channels Television reporter, covering the protests was threatened and intimidated by the hoodlums.
“Our correspondent was also surrounded and threatened by the thugs, who stated they were there to ensure no protest would take place today”, Channels Television said,
Eyewitnesses said before Agbalam’s arrival, two persons had been assaulted despite the presence of police officers.
Reacting to the development, Rivers State Police Commissioner, Olatunji Disu, expressed concern and vowed to ensure that an investigation takes place.
“We will ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences”, he stated.
