August 04, (THEWILL) – Hoodlums, on Sunday, chased away protesters who converged at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in the Ojota area of Lagos State, to protest the hunger and economic hardship in the country.
The demonstration, which began without incident, saw a significant escalation around 10:30 a.m. when a lawyer, identified only as JP, urged the protesters to leave the protest ground, citing President Bola Tinubu’s recent address to the nation. However, another group, led by 70-year-old Adegboyega Adeniji of Peace Action Transformation, insisted on staying until further notice.
The police intervened and requested the small group of protesters to disperse. Shortly after, a group of hoodlums, whom the protesters claimed were state-sponsored, arrived from the other side of the road to disperse them.
By 11:30 a.m., the hoodlums returned and chased all the protesters away from Ojota. The police have since occupied the protest ground.
Before being chased away, the protesters had chanted solidarity songs following President Bola Tinubu’s address. They expressed that the President had not addressed the core issues they raised, despite mentioning his administration’s efforts.
The nationwide protests against hunger and economic hardship entered their fourth day on Sunday.
