May 06, (THEWILL) – Hope for total reform of Nigeria’s electricity sector rose on Monday, following the approval of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
NIEP, first developed in December 2024 and submitted to President Bola Tinubu, serves as a comprehensive framework to align the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) with national development targets and international standards. It is also in line with Section 3(3) of the revised Electricity Act, 2023.
A statement by Bolaji Tunji, the special adviser on strategic communications and media relations to the Minister of Power, described the NIEP as a “comprehensive framework” addressing critical challenges in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said NIEP also prioritises renewable energy integration, energy efficiency, and improved governance.
Ratified during the FEC meeting held on Monday, the NIEP, developed through extensive stakeholder engagement, including public and private sector participants, civil society groups, academia, and development partners, replaces the outdated National Electric Power Policy of 2001.
According to the Minister, NIEP supports the development of state electricity markets and promotes a decentralised, but coordinated approach to power sector planning and management.
The document is structured across eight chapters covering electricity market design, value chain analysis, stakeholder roles, legal and regulatory frameworks, climate policy, gender and social inclusion, local content, and research and development.
Adelabu described the NIEP as a “living document” intended to evolve with the sector’s needs while encouraging innovation and consumer protection.
