Ibom Air has recorded a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s aviation industry with the successful launch of its first scheduled international flight between Uyo and Accra, Ghana, officially opening international commercial operations from the Victor Attah International Airport.
The historic flight, which departed Uyo for Accra and returned the same day, also established seamless passenger connectivity between Abuja and Accra through Uyo, a development expected to strengthen Akwa Ibom State’s growing status as an aviation hub in West Africa.
With the milestone, the Victor Attah International Airport joins the league of Nigerian airports handling scheduled international commercial flights, offering travellers from Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states easier access to regional destinations.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, Mr George Uriesi, described the commencement of international services as a defining moment in the airline’s growth and a significant achievement for Nigeria’s aviation sector.
He said the successful transit of passengers between Abuja and Accra via Uyo demonstrated the operational capacity of the state’s new international terminal and the airline’s commitment to delivering seamless travel experiences.
According to Uriesi, the modern airport terminal provides passengers with a world-class travel environment that combines comfort, efficiency and convenience, adding that the development is set to redefine air travel through southern Nigeria.
He commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his support and investment in aviation infrastructure, noting that the administration’s commitment made the commencement of international operations possible.
Ibom Air disclosed that the Uyo–Accra route will operate twice weekly on Sundays and Thursdays, providing travellers with direct regional connectivity while expanding travel options for passengers from Abuja and other parts of the country.
The airline said the new route aligns with its strategy to deepen regional connectivity across Africa, enhance passenger experience, and position Akwa Ibom as a strategic gateway for international travel, trade and investment.
It is believed that the commencement of scheduled international flights from Uyo will boost tourism, commerce and cross-border business activities while further strengthening the state’s economic competitiveness.
