Ibom Ladies Golf Championship

March 26, (THEWILL) — Organisers of the maiden Ibom Ladies Championship have announced that more than 100 golfers from across Nigeria will participate in the inaugural tournament scheduled for March 27–28 at the Ibom Golf and Country Club, Uyo.

Addressing journalists at a press conference held on Wednesday at the Clubhouse of Ibom Golf and Country Club, the President of the Organising Committee, Mrs Aniekan Essienette, said the championship marks a historic milestone for women’s golf in Akwa Ibom State.

Essienette disclosed that about 60 of the participants are women, while the rest are men competing in various categories, including veterans (55 years and above), handicap 0–28, and handicap 29–36 for both genders.

She explained that the highlight of the tournament is the race to crown the Ibom Ladies Champion, a title restricted to female golfers with handicaps between 0 and 28.
“The selected ladies will compete over two days, and the best overall performance will determine the champion”, she said, noting that winners across categories would receive trophies and other prizes.

Describing the event as “the first of its kind”, Essienette said the championship was initiated under the leadership of the Lady Captain, Miss Marianne Cephas, to promote women’s participation in golf and elevate the club’s profile nationally.

Cephas, in her remarks, said the tournament had attracted players from golf clubs in Lagos, Port Harcourt and other parts of the country, adding that top officials of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria were expected to attend.

“This is a dream we have nurtured to host a national-level ladies’ championship. We are proud to finally bring it to life”, she said.

Also speaking, the Club Manager and Golf Professional, Emmanuel Ochai, assured participants of a fair and well-organised competition, stating that officials would ensure strict adherence to rules throughout the tournament.

Representatives of sponsors, including Ibom Hotel and Ibom Air, reaffirmed their support for the initiative, emphasising its role in promoting women’s empowerment, sports development, and tourism in the state.

Head of Sales and Marketing at Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Idorenyin Ekong, said the hospitality outfit was committed to delivering a world-class experience for players and guests.

“We are not just hosting a golf tournament; we are providing a complete experience—from accommodation to catering and overall comfort”, he said.
Organisers also highlighted the economic benefits of the event, noting that the influx of participants and visitors would boost local businesses, hospitality services, and tourism.

The Club Captain, Isua Archibong, commended the women’s section for organising the championship, describing it as a landmark achievement in the club’s nearly two-decade history.

“This is the first major ladies’ tournament since the club’s inception, and it signals the growth of the game beyond a male-dominated space”, he said.

He added that the championship would now become a recurring fixture on the club’s annual calendar.

The event is expected to feature competitive play, networking opportunities, and increased visibility for Akwa Ibom as a growing golf and tourism destination.
