June 05, (THEWILL) – The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday commissioned 31 newly acquired operational gunboats for the Nigeria Police Force Marine Unit, marking a major step toward strengthening maritime security across the country’s waterways.
The commissioning ceremony, held in Lagos, underscores a renewed investment in maritime policing, aimed at tackling waterway crimes, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring safer navigation within Nigeria’s coastal corridors.
The IGP was accompanied by top police brass, including the Deputy Inspector General in charge of Operations, Yakubu Kwazi; AIG Zone 2, Adegoke Fayoade; AIG in charge of the Police Mobile Force, Funsho Adegboye; AIG Special Protection Unit, Tunji Rilwan Disu; and the Force Marine Officer, ACP Chima Ogarashi.
Also in attendance were key stakeholders from maritime agencies, representatives of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Chief Executive Officer of Sensor and Safety Ltd, Chief Oguntade Majekodunmi, represented by Mr. Babalola Tunde.
Speaking at the event, Egbetokun described the acquisition and deployment of the gunboats as a strategic response to “evolving security dynamics” in Nigeria’s maritime environment.
IGP stated, “This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to strengthening the operational capacity of the Force Marine Unit.
“These assets will significantly enhance patrol and rescue operations, deter criminal elements, and counter economic sabotage on our waters.”
He emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration in securing Nigeria’s maritime domain and charged officers of the Marine Unit to utilize the boats effectively in combating illegal activities and ensuring seamless port operations.
“This is not just about equipment; it’s about securing livelihoods, protecting investments, and maintaining national stability,” Egbetokun added.
