March 31, (THEWILL) — The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed reports suggesting he has resigned from office, describing the claims as false and reassuring Nigerians of his continued dedication to transforming the country’s electricity sector.
Media reports on Tuesday stated that Adelabu resigned as Minister to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, following the directive by President Bola Tinubu mandating all ministers, heads of agencies and political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Responding in a WhatsApp chat with journalists, his Special Assistant on Media, Bolaji Tunji, dismissed the reports as fake news, insisting that the minister remains fully engaged in his official duties.
“The news of the minister’s resignation is fake. There is no truth to it”, Tunji said, while also circulating images of a purported resignation letter clearly marked “fake news”.
THEWILL gathered that the rumours gained traction after recent comments by Adelabu, which some observers interpreted as suggesting a possible political move ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the minister has consistently emphasised that his primary focus remains on addressing Nigeria’s longstanding power challenges. At a press briefing in Abuja last week, he reaffirmed his commitment to service delivery in the sector.
“What matters to me most now is this job that I am doing as the Honourable Minister of Power. I am excelling on the job, and that is my priority for now, tackling foreseen, known and unforeseen challenges in the power sector”, Adelabu said.
He further stressed that resolving electricity supply issues across the country remains his immediate concern, underscoring ongoing efforts to stabilise the national grid and improve access to power.
“Resolving the power supply challenges is my priority for now. We have between now and March 31, if I am interested, in the gubernatorial contest in Oyo State. It is all about service, either at the national level or at the subnational level”, he added.
While acknowledging that his political future remains open, Adelabu maintained that any decision regarding a potential gubernatorial bid in Oyo State would be made in due course.
“I will not say more than that. Whether I will be here or I will be leaving is a matter of time. I will get back to you”, he said.
