February 04, (THEWILL) — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that preparations for the 2027 general elections are already underway, even as the 2025 Electoral Act Amendment Bill remains under final consideration by the National Assembly.
Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, the Chairman of the Commission, made the disclosure on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja.
He revealed that the electoral body has completed work on the strategic election timetable and schedule of activities but is awaiting the conclusion of legislative action to finalize the legal framework for the polls.
“Despite the ongoing legislative process regarding the amended Electoral Act, INEC is fully prepared and proactive in its planning for the 2027 general elections,” he said.
Amupitan, who assumed office in October 2025, explained that while the Commission has submitted robust recommendations to the lawmakers, the final timing of the Act’s passage could necessitate minor adjustments to certain administrative timelines.
He stressed that the Commission remains committed to delivering a transparent, credible, and technologically driven electoral process.
“Some activities in the timetable may need to be modified depending on when the National Assembly concludes work on the amended law, but our commitment to institutional integrity and credible elections is unwavering,” he added.
