
May 21, (THEWILL) — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election to fill the vacant seat in the National Assembly.
A statement signed on Thursday by the Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, stated that the election would take place between 8:00am and 2:30pm across the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
The affected local government areas are Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Khana, and Gokana.
According to the electoral body, the bye-election will be conducted in 88 Registration Areas/Wards and 1,629 Polling Units spread across the senatorial district.
INEC assured political parties, voters, and stakeholders of its readiness to conduct a free, fair, and credible election, noting that all necessary arrangements were being put in place to ensure a smooth exercise.
The Commission assured the public of its commitment to a free, fair, and credible bye-election.
