September 04, (THEWILL) — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has entered into a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to harmonise identity and voter registration processes across Nigeria.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this when the NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, led a delegation to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Yakubu described the collaboration as a transformative step for Nigeria’s electoral system, noting that both agencies manage the country’s largest biometric databases, INEC for elections and NIMC for citizenship identification.
Confirming the partnership in a statement on X, NIMC said the initiative would integrate the National Identification Number (NIN) into future Continuous Voter Registration exercises to ensure that every eligible voter is uniquely and verifiably identified.
“The collaboration between the NIMC and INEC is a strategic alliance for national progress. Integrating NIN into voter registration will strengthen credibility and eliminate multiple registrations,” Coker-Odusote said.
She added that NIMC is committed to providing INEC with secure, verifiable, and up-to-date identity data for voter verification, while ensuring data privacy and protection in line with national laws and global best practices.
The agencies noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to deepen electoral integrity through digital innovation.
