March 11, (THEWILL) — The Ondo State Government has imposed a ban on commercial motorcycle (Okada) operations between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., citing rising incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities in the state.
Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, announced this on Wednesday while parading 70 suspects arrested for various offences in Akure, the state capital.
Adeleye explained that the restriction, which had been previously enforced, is now strictly enforced and took immediate effect. He added that all commercial motorcyclists are required to register and obtain certified eligibility documents within two weeks before they can resume operations.
“After two weeks, riders will be required to pay N20,000 to the Board of Internal Revenue for registration. We want all Okadas in the state properly documented,” he stated.
The commander also explained that cart-pushing in major towns will be banned, scrap metal dealers must register and have their activities regulated, and the display of farm produce in unauthorised locations is prohibited, as such areas have reportedly been used as monitoring points by criminal elements.
During the security parade, Adeleye provided a breakdown of the 70 suspects: 39 were apprehended for breaching law and order, 18 for kidnapping, 1 for anti-grazing violations, 1 for human trafficking, and 11 for cult-related offences.
The Ondo State Government has urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and comply with the new directives to help maintain peace and safety across the state.
