May 13, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian senate has directed the military to deploy troops and advanced equipment to Borno and Yobe states, to address the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks.
The directive followed the adoption of a motion of urgent importance raised at plenary on Tuesday, by the Senate chief whip, Tahir Munguno, in response to renewed insurgent attacks in the Northeast region, notably the killing of soldiers in Marte town of Monguno Local Government Area on Monday, May 12, and a similar attack on Tuesday on Gajiram, the headquarters of Nganzai LGA.
Munguno, who expressed concern over insurgent’s evolving tactics, noted the deployment of modern technology, including drones, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorist’s groups. He highlighted that the changing tactics of insurgents have resulted to high civilian and military casualties.
Adopting the motion, the lawmakers directed the military high command to redeploy sufficient troops with modern technology to effectively combat the renewed threat.
The Red chamber mandated its committees on Army and Air Force to monitor and ensure compliance with the directive.
