April 12, (THEWILL) — The Israel Defense Forces has moved into a heightened state of operational readiness following the collapse of high-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran, a development that has sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East.
Confirming the breakdown of diplomacy, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said, “The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,” adding that “we are leaving without a deal… we need clear assurance that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons.”
He described Washington’s proposal as “our final and best offer,” but accused Tehran of refusing to meet the terms.
THEWILL earlier reported the unresolved sticking points that derailed the negotiations, including disagreements over the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, the fate of approximately 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, and Tehran’s demand for the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets.
Disputes also persist over the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The failed negotiations, which followed a two-week ceasefire earlier announced by Donald Trump, have now placed fragile diplomatic gains at risk, with analysts warning that the window for a peaceful resolution is narrowing.
Against this backdrop, Israel’s Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has ordered the military to raise its alert level and prepare for a possible resumption of hostilities.
According to Israeli media reports citing military sources, the directive includes activating a structured “combat readiness procedure” across all units.
Reinforcing this posture, Zamir had earlier declared during a visit to southern Lebanon that “the military is prepared to return to combat with full force if required at any given moment.”
Military officials indicate that all commands have been instructed to maintain maximum readiness, strengthen rapid-response capabilities, and prepare contingency plans.
However, they emphasised that no final decision has been taken to launch an offensive operation, suggesting that the measures remain precautionary.
