August 27, (THEWILL) — The embattled Deputy National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Nafiu Bala, has declared himself the authentic National Chairman of the party following the resignation of Ralph Nwosu.
Bala, in a statement on Tuesday, said his assumption of office was in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the ADC constitution, which empower the deputy national chairman to step in once the substantive chairman resigns.
Nwosu had stepped down earlier in the year after the opposition coalition adopted ADC, with former Senate President David Mark named interim national chairman.
But Bala insisted the process was unconstitutional and accused coalition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of plotting to hijack the party.
“As our party’s national leadership, we are not aware of any change of leadership. Our party’s former national chairman voluntarily resigned his position. The constitution of our party is very clear on the transfer of power when the chairman resigns,” he said.
“As far as our party is concerned, both the Electoral Act and our party constitution state that the deputy national chairman takes over the leadership of the party. I have therefore assumed office as the authentic national chairman of the African Democratic Congress,” Bala declared.
