November 01, (THEWILL) – The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Health Care Professionals (JOHESU) has suspended its seven-day warning strike.
THEWILL reports that the union had midnight of Friday, October 25, embarked on strike following the expiration of a fifteen-day notice of industrial action issued to the Federal Government.
Its National Chairman, Kabiru Minjibir, highlighted demands of the union, which include the immediate implementation of the consolidated health salary structure, payment of a twenty-five percent review of its arrears from June to December 2023, upward review of retirement age for health workers, tax waiver on healthcare workers allowances, and the immediate payment of COVID-19 inducement hazard allowance among other demands.
Announcing the suspension in a communique issued on Thursday, the union issued a six-week deadline to the federal government to fulfil all Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) obligations with the JOHESU.
The communique reads: “NEC-in-session after extensive deliberations resolved that the suspension of the seven-day warning strike effective from midnight, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, in the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the general public interest.
“Timeline of six weeks given to the Federal Government to meet all her obligations contained in the MoU.
“Expanded NEC meetings shall be convened upon the expiration of the six (6) weeks’ deadlines to review development and take appropriate decisions.
“indefinite strike action will be pursued if the expanded NEC of JOHESU is dissatisfied with the federal government’s implementation of MoU obligations”, the communique read.
