November 27, (THEWILL) — Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has safely departed Guinea-Bissau following recent political developments that unsettled the West African nation.
Military officers in Guinea-Bissau, on Wednesday, assumed “total control” of the country, suspending its electoral process and shutting all borders. The junta also arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and several top government and military officials.
Jonathan had been in the country on a regional assignment when the sudden political situation prompted an early departure. He travelled out with members of his delegation, including a seasoned diplomat and former UN Special Envoy for West Africa, Dr Ibn Chambas.
Amid political tension in Guinea-Bissau, the House of Representatives on Thursday called on the Federal Government to immediately deploy all diplomatic channels to ensure the safe evacuation of the former President.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday afternoon, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Jonathan left the country aboard a special flight arranged to ensure his secure evacuation.
“Former President Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Ibn Chambas”, he said.
The Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the safety of its statesmen and diplomatic representatives, particularly during periods of instability in the West African sub-region.
