September 29, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s political space was thrown into fresh speculation at the weekend after former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, declared that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in Minna on Saturday during the Niger State chapter congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gana described Jonathan as the “right man for the times,” insisting his return was driven by patriotism and responsibility.
“In 2015, former President Jonathan said his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians. After him, another president ruled for eight years, and another has ruled for two years.
“Nigerians have seen the difference, and they are now asking us to bring back Jonathan. I can confirm to you today that he will be on the ballot in 2027. He is a man of peace, humility, and experience to lead Nigeria out of these difficult times,” Gana said.
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, is remembered globally for conceding defeat to Muhammadu Buhari — a rare gesture in Africa that earned him international acclaim as a democrat.
Since leaving office, he has remained active in peace missions for ECOWAS and the African Union in The Gambia, Mali, and South Sudan.
Within the PDP, however, his rumored comeback has stirred mixed reactions. While some party chieftains believe Jonathan’s candidacy could “electrify the base” and unify the opposition, others warn it may complicate zoning and succession debates.
Analysts say his wide appeal across the South-South, South-East, and parts of the North could make him a formidable contender.
Yet, concerns over his past record on corruption and insecurity may haunt his campaign.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has not officially responded, though insiders dismissed his chances, describing his return as “a recycling of old leadership.”
With Gana’s endorsement, Jonathan’s name is firmly back in Nigeria’s political conversation. Whether his return will unite the PDP or reopen old wounds remains one of the defining questions as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
