February 05, (THEWILL) – The New Nigeria Peoples Party has elected Dr. Agbo Major as its new National Chairman at a convention held on Tuesday at RockView Hotel, Apapa, Lagos State.
THEWILL reports that notable absentees at the convention included the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, the NNPP’s only governor.
Other newly elected officials include Mr. Oginni Olaposi as National Secretary; Chief Felix Chukwurah, Deputy National Chairman (South); Mr. Adetoyese Omokanye, National Treasurer; Alhaji Babayo Muhammed, Deputy National Chairman (North); Abdulrasaq Abdulsallam, National Publicity Secretary; Hajia Aisha Kade, National Woman Leader; Chief Edward Ofomona, National Youth Leader; and Omolara Johnson, National Organising Secretary, among others.
The convention, which commenced at 9 p.m., concluded around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. In attendance were members of the party’s Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee, and some elected officeholders from across the country.
This development follows a November 1, 2024, Abia High Court ruling that directed the NNPP’s BoT, led by Founder and Chairman, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, to initiate the repositioning and reconstitution of all party organs from ward congresses to the national convention. The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognize and liaise with the new board.
Addressing members at the convention, Aniebonam stated, “Pursuant to the court’s judgment, the board has successfully repositioned and reconstituted its ward executives up to zonal officers.
“Today, the board concludes its assignment with this national convention to elect and establish the NWC to manage the party’s administration. INEC and security agencies were duly notified.”
In his welcome remarks, BoT Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Babayo, emphasised the party’s unity and focus on delivering credible leadership and governance that prioritizes the needs of Nigerians.
He urged the newly elected executives to lead with integrity and dedication.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Major called on aggrieved party members to return and contribute to the party’s growth.
“I thank all delegates for the confidence reposed in me. The NWC under my leadership is committed to repositioning our party for the 2027 elections. We will not tolerate anything short of excellence. The National Secretary will issue directives to this effect soon,” Major stated.
