February 16, (THEWILL) – The Kano State Government has restored water supply to three communities after a decade-long disruption, as part of efforts to improve access to potable water across the state.
The benefiting communities—Kunya, Wailare, and Kilawa—are located in Minjibir, Makoda, and Dambatta Local Government Areas, respectively.
State Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Doguwa, made this known while speaking to journalists after inspecting water supply infrastructure in the affected areas.
Doguwa lamented the hardships residents faced due to the prolonged water scarcity, describing the situation as **unacceptable**.
“For about ten years, the people of these communities endured severe hardships due to the absence of potable water. We are pleased to have restored supply, and we remain committed to extending this intervention to other affected areas,” he said.
The commissioner also disclosed that efforts were underway to restore water to Dambatta, the headquarters of Dambatta Local Government Area, which has similarly been without water for a decade.
“I cannot imagine a town like Dambatta being without water for ten years. This is unacceptable. We are determined to address this issue as soon as possible,” Doguwa assured.
According to him, major obstacles hindering water restoration to Dambatta include rusted pipelines and the vandalization of the valve at Thomas Dam, which serves as a primary water source for the area.
He further stated that the ministry was actively repairing broken pipes to ensure the smooth flow of water once the supply is reinstated.
Doguwa reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to overhauling the state’s water infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted water supply to residents.
“With the unwavering support and commitment of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, we are confident that all these challenges will be surmounted,” he stated.
The commissioner assured that the ongoing water sector reforms would prioritize sustainable solutions to Kano’s water challenges, guaranteeing long-term relief for affected communities.
