February 16, (THEWILL) – Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has charged the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, to intensify efforts to end the persistent sit-at-home protests enforced by non-state actors in the Southeast.
The governor made the call during a courtesy visit by the GOC to the Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki, on Saturday. His remarks were contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor.
Nwifuru also urged security agencies to introduce a reward system to boost the morale of their personnel.
“I am confident that you are familiar with the security challenges in the Southeast. God has been with us, alongside the dedicated military officers deployed to our state. I want to assure you of our continued support, as we recognize and appreciate the service of good officers,” Nwifuru stated.
He further revealed that his administration has been providing financial incentives and even car gifts to security personnel as a gesture of appreciation for their service.
In his response, Major General Olatoye commended the governor for his support of the military and assured him of the army’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
“I assumed command as the GOC of 82 Division on January 27, 2025. The purpose of this visit is to familiarize myself with the operational environment, understand sector-specific challenges, and foster inter-agency and inter-service collaboration,” Olatoye stated.
He lauded the governor’s efforts in strengthening security cooperation, particularly the provision of cash rewards to outstanding military personnel.
“I appreciate the honour and respect you accord the military. Your commitment to ensuring that all agencies work in synergy for optimal results is commendable,” he added.
