Katsina University Bans Christian Groups, Upholds Muslim Society As Only Association On Campus

SAN FRANCISCO, January 23, (THEWILL) – Katsina government-owned Umar Musa Yar’Adua University, UMYU Katsina has barred any other religious or tribal associations from existing on the institution’s campus, aside the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria.

UMYU’s acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Sulaiman Kankara, handed this new directive in an internal memorandum dated January 17, 2017 to all students’ clubs and associations that were operating on its campus.

Kankara said the new directive was part of the resolutions arrived at by the institution’s authorities at its 59th meeting, which held on January 10, 2017.

The memo, a copy of which circulated on the internet at the weekend, was captioned, “Re: Registration of Students Clubs/Associations” and reads in part, “The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria is the only religious association allowed to operate in the university.

“All tribal and local government associations are prohibited by the university. Duly registered departmental associations should be allowed to operate, but they should observe item (I) above,” it added.

The university is due to resume a new academic session on January 30, 2017.
