June 09, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian delegation attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, has been thrown into mourning following the death of prominent labour leader, Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke.
Adeleke, who served as Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), died on Tuesday after a brief illness while participating in the conference as a member of Nigeria’s delegation.
THEWILL gathered that Adeleke became ill during the conference and was subsequently taken for medical attention in Geneva, where he later passed away.
Confirming the development, an official of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) described the late labour leader as a dedicated and committed trade unionist whose lifelong service was centred on workers’ welfare and the advancement of labour rights.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the official stated.
A member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Adeleke played an active role in labour advocacy and workers’ welfare initiatives during his tenure as Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council.
The NLC noted that throughout his career, he remained unwavering in his commitment to promoting decent work standards and advancing social justice for workers.
“Comrade Domingo was a committed trade unionist whose dedication to Nigerian workers and the struggle for decent work took him to the global stage right to the end. His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him and worked alongside him,” the official added.
The Congress also disclosed that members of its leadership visited the hospital where his body is currently being kept and have commenced necessary arrangements towards the repatriation of his remains to Nigeria.
“The NLC leadership earlier today went to the hospital to see his body in solidarity, mourn his passing, and begin the process of arranging the necessary procedures,” the statement added.
Tributes have continued to pour in from labour leaders, workers, and associates who remembered Adeleke as a passionate advocate for workers’ rights and a dedicated public servant.
The NLC, while extending condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, and members of the labour movement nationwide, described his passing as a painful and significant loss to organised labour in Nigeria.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the NLC family, and all comrades across Lagos State. May his soul rest in peace, and may his commitment to workers’ rights continue to inspire us,” the Congress said.
Colleagues and associates remember Adeleke as a steadfast labour activist whose career was defined by service, advocacy, and an enduring commitment to the welfare and interests of Nigerian workers.
