October 20, (THEWILL) — The Lagos State Police Command has denied reports claiming that its operatives arrested and detained human rights activist, Desire Ihekaire, who staged a lone protest at the Iyana Ipaja area of the state to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Ihekaire had on Monday joined the nationwide call for Kanu’s release, holding a placard in solidarity with other agitators in Abuja led by activist Omoyele Sowore. Eyewitnesses said a few onlookers joined him, chanting, “Free Nnamdi Kanu now!”
However, a viral video on social media showed police operatives and riot personnel arriving at the scene, dispersing the crowd with tear gas and reportedly arresting Ihekaire.
Reacting to the video in a post on its official X handle, the Lagos State Police Command dismissed the reports, insisting that Ihekaire was neither arrested nor detained.
According to the statement, the tear gas was used to disperse suspected hoodlums who tried to hijack the protest and cause chaos.
The police said Ihekaire was only cautioned to operate within the confines of the law before being allowed to go.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to clarify that Mr. Declan Ihekaire, who staged a lone protest in the Iyana Ipaja area, was not detained.
“Tear gas was fired by police and riot personnel to disperse miscreants and hoodlums who attempted to hijack the protest and cause mayhem among innocent people in the area.
“He was cautioned on the need to operate within the confines of the law and avoid instigating violence or disturbing public peace. He was subsequently allowed to go,” the statement read.
The Command added that a “show of force” exercise led by the Commissioner of Police across Lagos was ongoing to boost public confidence and ensure security.
“The state remains calm and peaceful, and residents are going about their lawful activities without hindrance,” the statement added.
