December 17, (THEWILL) — The High Court of Lagos State has announced that it will observe its 2025 Christmas vacation from December 24, 2025, to January 2, 2026, while ensuring that urgent matters are heard during the period.
A circular dated November 26 and issued by the Lagos State Judiciary was signed by the Chief Registrar, Tajudeen Elias.
According to the circular made available to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, approved the Christmas vacation in accordance with the provisions of Order 49 Rules 4(C) and 5 of the High Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2019.
It further stated that regular court sittings and judicial activities would resume on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Despite the vacation, the judiciary disclosed that arrangements have been made for the hearing of urgent applications. Each judge, the circular explained, will attend to all urgent matters arising from substantive cases already assigned to them.
The circular added that where an urgent application relates to a substantive matter that has not yet been assigned to any judge, such an application will be heard by the judge to whom it is specifically assigned.
“Notwithstanding the provisions of Order 49 Rule 4, any cause or matter may be heard by a judge during the Christmas vacation if it is urgent”, it stated.
It noted that such hearings would only be conducted in strict compliance with the conditions prescribed under Order 49 Rule 5 of the High Court Rules.
The Lagos State Judiciary urged litigants, legal practitioners and members of the public to take note of the vacation period, while reassuring court users that mechanisms are in place to ensure that matters requiring urgent judicial intervention are promptly addressed in accordance with the law.
