April 01, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos State has streamlined traffic control operations with the withdrawal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) from traffic enforcement duties, a move aimed at boosting efficiency and strengthening professionalism on the roads.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, and made public on Tuesday through the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi.
According to Adebisi, the decision is part of deliberate efforts to streamline traffic management across Lagos State, ensuring clearer operational roles, improved accountability, and alignment with global best practices.
“The withdrawal applies strictly to traffic-related functions. The task force will continue to carry out its other statutory duties and operational mandates,” she stated.
She further clarified that the Taskforce remains active in other areas of its responsibilities, urging residents not to misconstrue the directive as a total disbandment of the unit.
Adebisi also advised motorists and members of the public to verify the identity of personnel and agencies involved in traffic enforcement before making allegations, noting that multiple authorised bodies operate within the state.
Reassuring residents, the Police Command emphasised that all operations would continue strictly in line with the law, with renewed focus on professionalism, transparency, and public trust.
She called on Lagosians to remain law-abiding and cooperate with all legitimate security agencies, stressing that public support is essential to maintaining order and safety on the roads.
The move is widely seen as a step toward eliminating overlaps in traffic enforcement while enhancing coordination among agencies responsible for managing Lagos’ busy road network.
