July 12, (THEWILL) — Residents of Lagos State turned out on Saturday to elect chairmen and councillors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
According to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), a total of 57 chairmanship seats and 376 councillorship positions are being contested by candidates from 15 of Nigeria’s 19 registered political parties.
In a statement released by LASIEC, the commission revealed that 7,060,195 voters were registered to participate in the election, with 6,214,970 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected and 845,225 PVCs still unclaimed.
The election is being conducted across 13,325 polling units spread throughout the state’s LGAs and LCDAs.
Voting commenced in many areas as early as 8 a.m., with security operatives including the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and members of the joint military task force, Operation MESA, deployed to maintain peace and order during and after the exercise.
Chairman of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd), had earlier assured Lagosians of the commission’s preparedness, noting that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure a smooth and credible election.
“We have put in place adequate logistics and security to guarantee the integrity of this process,” she said.
The local government election marks a key moment in grassroots democracy in Lagos, as residents choose leaders who will oversee administration and development at the council level for the next four years.
