March 23, (THEWILL) – A lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Jos, Mark Lere, has identified insecurity as the most threatening problem in his Constituency and promised that the same issue will form the Crux of his Constituency project if he is elected into the House of Representatives in the forthcoming general elections.
Barrister Lere, who is contesting on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said for sometime now, insecurity has been the bane of development in his area and most part of central Plateau, to the extent that the people’s heritage is being violated by crimes like land grabbing, displacement of persons from their ancestral homes, and that food insecurity is setting in because farmers no longer feel safe to farm.
Pointing out that local terrorism has really abused the fundamental rights of the people of Jos Constituency, he insisted that to restore the people and the area on the path of progress and prosperity, peace must first of be guaranteed by addressing injustices, such as land grabbing and usurpation of homes and displacement of natives.
The protection of lives and property being the primary responsibility or first line charge of every government. He said a trend of destroying farmlands and crops and scampering the farming community must be halted for harmonious coexistence to take over and drive the strive for development.
He said once the Constituency and the people are secured, the challenge will be economic empowerment, especially the youth population, in the face of dwindling employment opportunities.
Barrister Lere is of the view that economic empowerment will not only keep the youth and business population engaged and active, but will impact positively on grassroot business tempo, with ultimate value addition to business turnover, trade volume, variety chain, job creation, prosperity, and gross domestic product (GDP) standing.
