January 29, (THEWILL) — Bayer Leverkusen booked their spot in the UEFA Champions League knockout-stage play-offs following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Villarreal at BayArena on Wednesday. Kasper Hjulmand’s team will now face either Borussia Dortmund or Olympiacos, with progression to the last 16 at stake.
The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute when goalkeeper Arnau Tenas hesitated over a clearance, allowing Malik Tillman to charge down his pass and divert the ball into an unguarded goal. Tenas nearly compounded his error moments later when Ibrahim Maza’s long-range effort struck the post and rebounded off the keeper’s back, though he scrambled to clear the danger.
Leverkusen doubled their advantage 10 minutes before the interval through Tillman’s second goal of the evening. Patrik Schick nodded down Alejandro Grimaldo’s delivery, leaving the midfielder to smash a half-volley into the bottom-right corner beyond the reach of Tenas.
Grimaldo added a third in the 57th minute, meeting Lucas Vazquez’s cross from the right flank with a powerful volley that flew underneath the Villarreal goalkeeper. The Spanish side, already eliminated from the competition, offered little resistance throughout the contest.
