September 19, (THEWILL) – The Presidential Committee on the Implementation of Livestock Reforms has submitted its inception report to President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu in July, inaugurated the Committee to address obstacles to agricultural productivity and open up new opportunities which will benefit farmers, herders, processors and distributors in the livestock-farming value chain.
Chaired by former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, the committee submitted its report to the President at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.
Speaking to State House correspondents shortly after meeting with the President, Professor Jega said the committee was able to identify measures on how the Nigerian government can judiciously utilise the livestock industry in Nigeria.
According to the former INEC boss, the 152-page document submitted to President Tinubu recommends measures that the government can use to mitigate the farmer/herders clashes across the country.
Stating the Committee’s position, Jega, who emphasised that it would be counter-productive to immediately stop open grazing as a traditional method of pastoralism, noted that both ranching and open grazing can co-exist in the short term until there is enough awareness and adequate infrastructure that will enhance the adoption of full ranching.
The committee has prescribed a ten-year plan that would guide the government to ensure remarkable improvement in all aspects of the livestock in Nigeria. It also recommended the adoption of technologies in livestock production in Nigeria.
According to Jega, detailed guidance on the operations of the newly created Federal Ministry of Livestock, which was announced by President Tinubu recently has been given in the report.
The report from the committee is expected to be made public very soon, with a view to getting more input from the public.
