July 12, (THEWILL) — One of the United States Republican Party’s most influential and recognisable lawmakers, Lindsey Graham, has died at the age of 71 after a brief illness.
THEWILL reports that Graham died on Saturday, according to a statement issued by his office and posted on his official social media accounts early Sunday. The statement described his death as following a “brief and sudden” illness but did not disclose further details.
“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period”, the statement said.
Graham’s passing marks the end of a political career that saw him become one of the most prominent Republican voices in Washington. Over the years, he earned a reputation for his strong positions on national security, defence, judicial appointments and federal spending, while also playing key roles in bipartisan negotiations on several major legislative issues.
First elected to the US Senate in 2002, Graham represented South Carolina for more than two decades, winning re-election in 2008, 2014 and 2020. His influence steadily grew within the Republican caucus, culminating in his appointment as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
In addition to leading the Budget Committee, Graham served on several of the Senate’s most powerful committees, including the Appropriations Committee, Judiciary Committee, and Environment and Public Works Committee, giving him significant influence over federal spending, judicial confirmations and environmental legislation.
Before his election to the Senate, Graham represented South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. He was first elected to the House in 1994 and served four terms before successfully contesting for the Senate.
Throughout his congressional career, Graham became a leading figure in debates on foreign policy, military affairs and constitutional issues. He was widely known for his advocacy of a strong national defence, his support for the US armed forces, and his active involvement in shaping the country’s judicial and budgetary policies.
