February 14, (THEWILL) – The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has restored Chief Uche C. Ihediwa, to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) after he was absolved of misconduct.
Ihediwa, a former Attorney General of Abia State, was suspended in 2024 by the LPPC from further using the rank pending the outcome of investigations against him.
In 2023, the then President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, had alleged in a petition to the LPPC that Ihediwa allegedly conducted himself in a manner incompatible with the dignity and honour of the rank of SAN.
Maikyau alleged that during the International Bar Association conference in Paris in 2023, Ihediwa said there was corruption in the appointment of judges in Abia State when he served as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state. He specifically accused Ihediwa of alleging that members of the Judicial Service Commission received bribes to influence the appointments of Judicial Officers.
However, after a review of the matter, the LPPC at its 163rd General Meeting, held on February 6, 2025, absolved the former Attorney General of any wrongdoing and restored him to the rank of SAN with effect from February 6, 2025.
A statement signed by the Secretary of the LPPC, Sarki Bello, said the committee at its 163rd General meeting held on July 1, 2024, considered extensively a petition written by the NBA against Ihediwa.
The statement read, “LPPC at its 163rd General Meeting held on July 1, 2024, suspended Chief Ihediwa (SAN) from further use of the rank of SAN based on a petition received by the LPPC.
“The LPPC, on February 6, 2025, after consideration of all material facts, resolved to restore Chief Ihediwa to the rank of SAN.
“Pursuant to the committee’s decision, Chief Ihediwa is hereby restored to the rank of SAN with effect from February 6, 2025. The general public is hereby informed of this decision.”
