September 02, (THEWILL) — Operatives of the Katsina State Police Command have intercepted two suspected gunrunners along the Ingawa–Karkarku Village Road, recovering a machine gun and over 1,200 rounds of live ammunition.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday, said the suspects — Abdussalam Muhammed, 25, and Aminu Mamman, 23, both from Baure village in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina — were apprehended around 4:35 am following credible intelligence and a swift tactical operation.
A search of their operational vehicle, a blue Volkswagen Golf with registration number RSH-528 BV, led to the discovery of one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, and 232 rounds of 7.62x69mm PKT ammunition concealed inside the car.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the arms and ammunition were being transported from Hadejia in Jigawa State to Safana LGA in Katsina for distribution to criminal gangs,” Adejobi stated.
He added that the suspects are in custody while investigations continue to trace the source and network behind the supply.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the operatives for the successful interception and urged them to sustain the momentum. He also appealed to Nigerians to continue providing credible intelligence to aid efforts at dismantling organised criminal networks across the country.
