December 13, (THEWILL) – French President Emmanuel Macron has named François Bayrou as the country’s new Prime Minister, marking the fourth appointment to the position this year.
Bayrou’s appointment follows the resignation of Michel Barnier on December 5, after an unprecedented no-confidence vote forged by a rare alliance between opposition parties from the left and far right.
Bayrou, 73, is a seasoned politician and a long-time ally of President Macron.
The former education minister and current mayor of Pau, a southwestern French town, has been a key figure in Macron’s political journey since his initial election in 2017.
Although Bayrou served briefly as justice minister in Macron’s first government, he resigned after facing allegations of fraud. He leads the Democratic Movement (MoDem), a centrist party he founded in 2007.
He is no stranger to national politics, having made three unsuccessful bids for the French presidency in 2002, 2007, and 2012, before throwing his support behind Macron’s campaigns.
