December 04, (THEWILL) – South Korean opposition parties have submitted a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after lawmakers invalidated the controversial martial law he declared Monday night.
THEWILL reports that President Yoon declared martial law, “To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements plundering people’s freedom and happiness.”
The declaration came after the opposition Democratic Party railroaded a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee, and submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
However, lawmakers with 190 of its 300 members present at parliament on Tuesday, passed a motion directing President Yoon to rescind his decision.
While the President has rescinded his decision on martial law following parliament’s invalidation, the country’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), has called for his impeachment.
“Even if martial law is lifted, he cannot avoid treason charges. It was clearly revealed to the entire nation that President Yoon could no longer run the country normally. He should step down”, a senior DP member of parliament, Park Chan-dae, said.
“The parliament would focus on immediately suspending the president’s business to pass an impeachment bill soonest”, Hwang Un-ha, an MP in the coalition, added.
