June 18 (THEWILL) — Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has credited the ongoing wave of infrastructure development across the state to fiscal reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, saying increased federal allocations to subnational governments have significantly strengthened the capacity of states to execute transformative development projects.
Mbah made the remarks during an inspection tour of key infrastructure projects in Enugu State by members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors as part of the Federal Government’s media tour aimed at showcasing projects being implemented under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda across the South-East region.
Speaking during the tour, the governor said the improved revenue profile of states following the Federal Government’s economic reforms has provided state governments with the financial leverage needed to embark on large-scale development initiatives that were previously difficult to fund.
According to him, the Tinubu administration’s bold policy decisions, particularly reforms affecting federal revenue distribution, have enabled states to move beyond routine governance obligations and focus more aggressively on infrastructure expansion and economic development.
“It would have been impossible, to say the least, for us as a state to have done things at the scale we did without some of the bold and courageous policies of Mr President”, Mbah said.
The governor explained that prior to the current reforms, many states across the federation struggled to meet recurring obligations, including payment of salaries, leaving limited room for capital projects and long-term investments. He noted that increased allocations to states have now created opportunities for governments at the subnational level to aggressively pursue developmental projects to improve living conditions and stimulate economic growth.
Mbah also commended President Tinubu for implementing broader economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate unification, tax reform initiatives, education financing interventions and policies targeted at strengthening national productivity. He described the reforms as difficult but necessary measures capable of laying the foundation for long-term economic recovery while expanding fiscal opportunities for state governments.
As part of the inspection exercise, the members of the delegation visited several major infrastructure projects currently under construction in Enugu State.
Among the projects inspected were the ongoing construction of the Abakpa Flyover Interchange Bridge in Enugu metropolis, reconstruction of the 38.6-kilometre Enugu–Onitsha–Port Harcourt concrete pavement road, and the dualisation of the 21.5-kilometre Enugu International Airport Road extending toward the Ebonyi State border.
The delegation also inspected the ongoing dualisation of the 40-kilometre Owo–Ubahu–Amankanu–Umalo–Ekem road project, the Enugu State Tractors Assembly Plant, and the 300-bed Enugu State International Specialist Hospital.
At the specialist hospital, officials were shown advanced medical infrastructure including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, cancer treatment equipment, mammography machines, modern surgical theatres and other high-end healthcare facilities aimed at reducing medical tourism and improving access to specialised healthcare services.
The team further visited the site of the ongoing Enugu Smart City project, an ambitious urban development initiative expected to transform the state into a modern technological and economic hub in the South-East region.
Reaffirming his support for the Federal Government’s development strategy, Mbah said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda remains focused on empowering state governments through increased funding and strategic partnerships designed to accelerate development and ensure inclusive growth nationwide.
“President Bola Tinubu has ensured that development is not concentrated in one part of the country. Everywhere has been taken care of, and people are beginning to feel the impact of the road projects and interventions ongoing in different parts of Nigeria”, he said.
The inspection exercise forms part of the Federal Government’s effort to showcase the implementation of projects linked to the Renewed Hope Agenda while assessing how increased federal allocations to states are being deployed to improve infrastructure, healthcare delivery and economic development across the federation.
The media tour was coordinated by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a government-backed public engagement initiative focused on highlighting policy outcomes and development projects under the current administration.
