July 05, (THEWILL) — Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty sent France into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday as Didier Deschamps’ side ground out a tense 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Round of 16 encounter proved far more difficult than many expected, with Paraguay producing another disciplined defensive display to frustrate one of the tournament favourites for more than an hour before Mbappe finally broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.
France dominated possession from the opening whistle but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a compact Paraguayan side that defended in numbers and looked to spring forward through Julio Enciso and Miguel Almiron on the counterattack.

Less than 10 minutes after coming on, Doue burst into the penalty area and won the decisive spot-kick following a clumsy challenge. Mbappe stepped up and calmly converted in the 70th minute, taking his tally to seven goals at the tournament and moving level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
The strike also marked the French captain’s 19th career World Cup goal, leaving him just one shy of matching Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record.
Paraguay’s hopes of forcing extra time faded as injuries disrupted their momentum. Defender Omar Alderete, along with attacking duo Enciso and Almiron, were all forced off, while Diego Gomez was also withdrawn, leaving the South Americans short of options during the closing stages.
France comfortably protected their slender advantage despite a physical finish to the contest, with tempers flaring as both sides exchanged robust challenges in the closing minutes.
The victory sends Les Bleus into a heavyweight quarter-final showdown with Morocco, who earlier swept aside co-hosts Canada 3-0. The last-eight encounter, scheduled for July 9 in Boston, promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament as France seek another step towards a third World Cup title, while Morocco aim to continue their remarkable rise on the global stage.
