June 03, (THEWILL) – The Niger State Government on Tuesday said that more than 200 bodies have so far been recovered following the devastating floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmad Suleiman, who made this known in a statement, said the search and recovery efforts were still ongoing.
“We have recovered more than 200 corpses, but we are still searching. As of now, no one can give an exact casualty figure because recovery operations are ongoing,” Suleiman said.
He added that Governor Umaru Bago had activated emergency response mechanisms and directed the immediate distribution of relief materials to displaced residents currently taking shelter in makeshift camps.
“The Niger State Government has taken swift action, and several agencies and ministries have contributed. The extent of the destruction on the ground cannot be fully captured on social media — you have to visit the scene to grasp the scale.
“The government has sent trailers loaded with rice to the victims. In addition, the wife of the governor visited the area on Monday and donated N50 million to support affected families,” he added.
